Happy tramping

‘Tramping’ is the NZ word for hiking, they also call supermarket trollies ‘trundlers’!
Today was a very happy tramping day. We drove 10 minutes down the road to the Blue Pools car park, it’s a bit of a tourist must photo spot but we got there early and headed off on the Young River Track, as recommended by Pete the lodge owner. The tracks are limitless and potentially very challenging but we stuck to relatively easy terrain.

It was still a bit of an adventure, especially a couple of swing bridges at the start which I thought might be the end of the walk for poor hubby but he did it.

This is a fantail bird which comes very close to humans hoping to pick up bugs which have been disturbed by footsteps.

The walk was really varied with rainforest, waterfalls, rivers and extremely soggy meadows.

He loved it really!

The third swing bridge was however a bridge too far for Mr Vertigo so it was time to turn back.

By the time we go back to the blue pools, the hoardes had arrived but it was still fun skimming stones into the beautiful river.

We headed back to the peace and tranquillity of our fabulous lodge and Pete offered to take me on a walk to the river. He moved here with his family 11 years ago and built the lodge having had enough of the rat race. What a place to live..

He also allegedly has bull whispering abilities (I wasn’t convinced!)

After a really lovely day, the walking shoes are now drying out in the sun whilst we watch a hawk from the sofa on our patio.
