Made it to Franz Josef

Torrential rain woke us up several times last night and the view from the window wasn’t exactly inspiring.

We knew the forecast was bad and were concerned that the road to Franz Josef would be closed. There were numerous land slips and totally sodden road workers attempting to win what looked like a losing battle.

It was therefore a relief to make it to Franz Josef Glacier Township but definitely no chance of seeing any mountains or glaciers today.
Joe had recommended visiting Lake Mapourika - I’m sure it’s lovely in the sunshine...

The only sensible option on a day like this is to find a good place for lunch - Snake Bite Brewery had really good Asian food which made a pleasant change from lamb and chips and a particularly good view of drowned supermarket customers.

We are staying in an ‘Oasis’ hotel with no shortage of water..

An afternoon of reading in the motel room, watching the arrival of damp people in sodden campervans - definitely sensible to abandon camping today.
